If you are a candidate for oral sedation, the dentist will prescribe a sedative for you to take before your appointment, and additional medicine to take, as needed, during the appointment to achieve a near-sleep state. Your dentist may also administer nitrous oxide to enhance the sedative effects. Because you will enter a state of deep relaxation, we require our patients to designate a driver to take them to and from the sedation appointment. Safety measures associated with oral sedation or conscious sedation also include constant monitoring of your heart rate and blood pressure during the procedure.
