Say the word “orthodontics” to someone, and chances are that he or she will immediately think of traditional metal braces. If he or she has some familiarity with modern trends in dentistry, perhaps Invisalign® will come to mind. What many people do not realize, however, is that there may be a quicker alternative to both of these treatments in the form of porcelain veneers.
Porcelain veneers are among the most transformative and popular treatments in cosmetic dentistry. Made of medical-grade ceramic, porcelain veneers are placed on the front surfaces of teeth. In most cases, the primary purpose of porcelain veneers is to conceal aesthetic flaws such as chips, cracks, and discoloration. However, Jackson cosmetic dentist Steven Kail and his associates, Dr. Joseph Leonard and Dr. Chris Arnold, can also use porcelain veneers to correct mild-to-moderate orthodontic issues. For many patients, this form of “instant orthodontics” provides the best of two worlds, restoring both the beauty and the health of their smiles.
The Orthodontic Benefits of Porcelain Veneers
At our dental practice in Jackson, instant orthodontics is often preferred by adult patients who do not wish to undergo months of treatment to achieve straight, uniform smiles. Because porcelain veneers are customized to each patient’s unique needs, they complement surrounding teeth in terms of not only their color and texture, but also their size and shape. This means that porcelain veneers can:
- Close spaces between teeth
- Lengthen teeth that too short
- Widen teeth that are too narrow
- Straighten teeth that are slightly crooked
- Strengthen teeth that are weakened or cracked
- Improve the shape of teeth that are misshapen
In accomplishing one or more of these tasks, porcelain veneers improve the bite and create a more uniform looking smile. Porcelain veneers can last for ten years or longer, and can be replaced as necessary.
Candidacy for Instant Orthodontics
Not all orthodontic problems can be corrected with porcelain veneers. Among our patients in Jackson, porcelain veneers are recommended as an orthodontic treatment only to those with relatively minor orthodontic issues. In cases of more severe misalignment and bite problems, Invisalign® or traditional braces may be the only effective means of treatment. However, these patients may be good candidates for porcelain veneers once they have completed more conventional orthodontic treatment. In fact, porcelain veneers are often used as the “finishing touch” on orthodontic treatment.
Benefits and Risks of Instant Orthodontics
One of the chief benefits of instant orthodontics is that the improvements are, indeed, instant. Rather than having to undergo months of treatment, during which regular dental visits are necessary, treatment with porcelain veneers requires a minimal investment of time. Porcelain veneers offer the additional benefit of giving orthodontic patients a dramatic, yet natural-looking smile makeover.
However, many patients who are candidates for instant orthodontics opt for Invisalign® treatment because they don’t want to alter the structure of their teeth. In order to place porcelain veneers, our dentists must first remove some of the teeth’s natural enamel. Especially among patients who are satisfied with the color and shape of their teeth and simply want to have straighter smiles, discreet Invisalign® aligners may be a superior option.
