Methods of Securing Dental Bridges: Crowns versus Implants

By Steven Kail on June 30, 2014

An older, happy couple that is embracing each other in an outdoor settingThese days, there is no reason that anyone should have to live with missing teeth. Modern dentistry offers a variety of strong, aesthetically pleasing methods of replacing missing teeth and restoring form and function to the mouth. These methods include dental bridges supported by state-of-the-art dental implants, as well as more traditional dental bridges attached to dental crowns.

At Premier Dental Center in Jackson, implant-supported dental bridges and crown-supported dental bridges are both crafted to meet the highest standards of quality, durability, and strength. If you are currently missing one to three-in-a-row of your natural teeth, you can rely on the fact that, whichever treatment you choose, you will benefit from the best results possible. Plus, you will be able to eat, speak, and smile once again with confidence and ease.

Crown-supported Dental Bridges

Dentists have been using dental crowns to secure bridges in the mouth for decades with outstanding success. These traditional fixed bridges are affixed to the healthy teeth on either side of a gap through the use of bookending crowns. The crowns hold the replacement tooth or teeth in place, filling in the gap and completing the smile.

Crown-supported bridges offer numerous benefits to patients. In terms of improving oral health, these bridges help to prevent the natural teeth adjacent to a gap from drifting out of their optimal positions toward the unoccupied space. They also restore strength to the bite and beauty to the smile.

One of the chief benefits of traditional dental bridges is that they are generally far less expensive than implant-supported bridges and far more likely to be covered by dental insurance plans.

Implant-supported Dental Bridges

Aside from cost, implant-supported dental bridges offer all of the same benefits as traditional crown-supported bridges alongside numerous unique advantages, including:

  • They do not rely on surrounding natural teeth for support, but rather strong titanium implant posts that are surgically embedded in the jaw. When a crown is attached to a tooth, that tooth must be structurally altered to accommodate the crown. Implant-supported dental bridges require no such alteration of healthy teeth.
  • Because the titanium implants integrate with the jaw bone, essentially becoming part of the patient’s natural anatomy, they provide unrivaled stability and support for dental bridges.
  • Like crown-supported bridges, implant-supported dental bridges prevent surrounding teeth from drifting out of their optimal positions within the mouth. However, because they recreate the entire tooth from root to crown, implants help to prevent the jaw and gum tissues that support natural teeth from degrading from disuse.
  • With proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits, implant-supported bridges can last for a decade or longer, while the implants themselves can last for 40 years or even a lifetime.

Unfortunately, many people who could benefit from dental implants shy away from the treatment due to the cost. However, Premier Dental Center has teamed up with Wells Fargo to provide financing through the Wells Fargo Health Advantage card to qualified patients. This can help to make the cost of implants more manageable through low- and even no-interest payment plans.
