One of these state-of-the-art treatments is Invisalign®, a popular orthodontic options that functions like invisible braces. Let's go over the basics of Invisalign® and consider how long treatment with Invisalign® will take.

About Invisalign®

Invisalign® is a popular and highly effective alternative to traditional braces. Rather than using brackets and wires to reposition the teeth, the Invisalign® aligners use clear plastic retainers that are custom-molded to the teeth. There are new aligners provided for the patient to wear throughout the treatment process, allowing for a gradual and progressive change in dental alignment over time.

The Advantages of Invisalign®

The primary advantage of Invisalign® is that the clear plastic aligner trays that are used for treatment are extremely convenient. Patients can remove them to eat their favorite foods and drink their favorite beverages; clean up is easy as well. The Invisalign® trays themselves are difficult to detect, meaning that patients can smile and speak without people noticing that they are undergoing orthodontic care.

The Initial Invisalign® Consultation

The first part of the treatment timeline for Invisalign® is the initial consultation. This will allow you dentist or orthodontist to determine if Invisalign® is an ideal treatment for you. Once candidacy has been confirmed, impressions are made of the patient's teeth and computer models are used to custom design the Invisalign® treatment process.

A New Invisalign® Aligner Every Two Weeks

Patients will wear their initial Invisalign® aligner for two weeks, swapping that aligner out for a new Invisalign® aligner at that two-week mark. This process continues throughout the entire treatment, with the successive aligners labeled to ensure proper care. The initial days or wearing a new Invisalign® aligner may cause some soreness, but that's a sign that the treatment is working.

When to Wear Invisalign® Aligners

Patients are asked to wear their Invisalign® aligners at all times except for when eating, drinking, or cleaning their teeth. Patients can also remove their Invisalign® aligners during social functions or sports events as needed. Ideally, the aligners should be worn as much as possible.

How Long Will Invisalign® Treatment Last?

This can vary from patient to patient, but for the most part, Invisalign® treatment typically requires several months to a year to complete. This is about the same amount of time necessary for regular orthodontic care with braces.

In general, the treatment takes more time when patients are not teens of young adults simply given the nature of dental anatomy and the reduced malleability of the dental arch later in life.

Is Invisalign® Right for Me?

The best way to find out if Invisalign® is the right option for you and your needs is to schedule a consultation to see if you are a candidate for treatment. You'll learn more about the entire treatment process and how long it may take given your age and current situation.
