This paves the way for various oral health diseases such as cavities, decay, gum disease, and even bone loss.

To treat these oral problems, your dentist may have to perform oral surgery. In the past few years, more people have undergone oral surgery to fix their dental issues. These surgical procedures are done on your teeth, gums, or jaw, including teeth extractions, dental implants, and bone grafts. Here are some of the most common oral surgery procedures:

Tooth Extraction

A dentist may recommend tooth extraction if you have severe tooth decay or gum disease. Teeth extractions are one of the most common oral surgeries in the United States. Teeth extractions help to ensure that decay does not spread to other teeth.

Dental Implants

Another very common type of oral surgery is installing dental implants. Dentists place dental implants to replace missing teeth. The procedure entails drilling an implant post into the jawbone. Thereafter, the dental practitioner will fit an artificial tooth, such as a crown, on top of the implant.

Root Canals

Studies show that about 60 percent of Americans get a root canal surgery every year. The goal of a root canal is to save an infected tooth. In this procedure, the dentist removes the infected nerves and pulp inside a tooth, cleans the tooth, and places a filling inside the tooth to prevent further infection and sensitivity.

Bone Graft

A dentist will perform bone graft surgery on patients who have experienced bone loss and are candidates for dental implant surgery. Before the dentist can install dental implants, they will have to treat the bone loss by using a bone graft to increase jawbone density.

Corrective Jaw Surgery

If you injure or dislocate your jaw in an accident, you may require jaw surgery. Corrective jaw surgery helps to correct any injuries or misalignment of the jaw. In addition, the procedure can also help to deal with sleep apnea.
