I Am 70. How Can I Make Sure My Teeth Last As Long As I Do?

smiling senior couple sitting on benchIt is no surprise anymore when people live well past their 100th birthday. The U.S. Census Bureau notes there are nearly 100,000 centenarians in the United States today. With that in mind, you want to stay as healthy as possible so you can live your best life. That means you want your teeth to last as long as you do. Here are some pointers on dental health, no matter your age.

Keep Brushing Those Teeth

As people age, they tend to have more problems with their teeth. You may have problems with dry mouth, which allows bacteria to grow. These bacteria cause cavities as well as gum disease, so it is important to get rid of as many as you can. Brushing your teeth rids them of bacteria. Brushing your teeth also stimulates blood flow to your gums.

While we are on the subject, you should add flossing to your toothbrushing routine. Flossing removes both bacteria and food particles from your mouth while stimulating your gums. By brushing and flossing, you can help keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Eat a Healthy Diet

You have probably heard all of this before, but eating a healthy diet helps your teeth and gums. If you love salads or raw vegetables, you are chewing a lot of fiber and roughage, which act as natural toothbrushes, keeping your teeth and gums in good shape while providing essential vitamins and minerals. There are some vitamins and minerals found in both fruits and vegetables that are great for your dental health. Vitamin D and calcium are crucial for bone growth. Vitamins A and C help keep inflammation down and increase blood flow to your gums and teeth.
