Fact vs Myth About Root Canals
Posted on 8/3/2026 by Premier Dental Center
Let's talk about root canals. They often get a bad rap, but a lot of what you hear simply isn't true. Many people feel nervous when they hear the words "root canal," conjuring up images of pain and discomfort. The truth is, modern root canal treatment is usually a comfortable and effective way to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. Let's separate the facts from the fiction surrounding this common dental procedure. Myth: Root Canals Are Painful This is the biggest and most common misconception. The idea that root canals are excruciating comes from the past when dental techniques and pain management weren't as advanced as they are today. Now, with the help of local anesthetic, most patients report feeling little to no pain during the procedure. In fact, a root canal is performed to relieve pain caused by an infected or inflamed tooth. The pain you might be experiencing before the root canal is what people often associate with the procedure itself. Fact: Root Canals Relieve Pain As mentioned above, root canals are designed to eliminate pain. When the pulp (the soft tissue inside your tooth containing nerves and blood vessels) becomes infected, it can cause significant pain. Removing the infected pulp and sealing the tooth prevents further infection and alleviates the discomfort. Myth: Root Canals Make You Sick There's a persistent myth that root canals can cause other illnesses in the body. This idea stems from outdated and disproven research. Modern studies have shown no link between root canal treatment and systemic diseases. Properly performed root canals are safe and effective at preserving your oral health. Fact: Root Canals Save Teeth The primary goal of a root canal is to save a tooth that is severely damaged or infected. Without a root canal, the only other option is often extraction. Saving your natural tooth is almost always the best option. Maintaining your natural teeth helps you bite and chew properly, speak clearly, and keeps your other teeth from shifting out of place. Losing a tooth can also affect your jawbone, and can even have a cosmetic impact on your smile. Myth: Root Canals Are a Cosmetic Procedure Root canals are not primarily a cosmetic procedure. While saving your natural tooth can certainly contribute to a more aesthetically pleasing smile, the main purpose is to restore the tooth's health and function. If you are looking to whiten your teeth after a root canal, talk to your dentist about options. Sometimes teeth that have had root canals can darken over time, and there are ways to address that. Fact: Aftercare is Important While the root canal procedure itself is crucial, proper aftercare is equally important. You'll need to follow your dentist's instructions carefully, which may include taking prescribed medication, avoiding chewing on the treated side of your mouth for a while, and maintaining good oral hygiene. You should also avoid habits that can damage your teeth, such as using your teeth to open things or grinding your teeth. Also, be mindful of what you drink. Sugary drinks and acidic drinks can erode your teeth. With proper care, a root canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime.... Read more...
