Does Pregnancy Destroy My Teeth?
Posted on 5/1/2026 by Premier Dental Center
Pregnancy is a time of incredible change, and it’s easy to get caught up in preparing for your little one. But what about you ? You may have heard the old saying, "You lose a tooth for every baby." Fortunately, that’s just an old wives' tale! Pregnancy doesn't automatically ruin your teeth. However, it can bring about changes that increase your risk of dental problems if you aren't careful. Let's explore what's happening in your mouth during pregnancy and how to keep your smile healthy. Hormonal Havoc and Your Gums One of the biggest culprits affecting your oral health during pregnancy is hormones. Increased levels of hormones like estrogen and progesterone can make your gums more sensitive to plaque and bacteria. This heightened sensitivity can lead to a condition called pregnancy gingivitis. Symptoms include red, swollen, and tender gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss. While usually reversible with good oral care, untreated gingivitis can potentially lead to more serious gum disease. Morning Sickness and Enamel Erosion Morning sickness, unfortunately, can affect your teeth. The stomach acids that come up during vomiting are very strong and can erode your tooth enamel. Enamel is the hard, protective outer layer of your teeth, and when it weakens, your teeth become more vulnerable to tooth decay. Dietary Changes and Cravings Pregnancy cravings are real! Many women experience strong urges for specific foods, and often these are sugary or carbohydrate-rich treats. Frequent snacking, especially on sugary foods, provides fuel for the bacteria in your mouth, which then produce acids that attack your teeth and contribute to tooth decay. Saliva Changes During pregnancy, some women experience changes in the composition and amount of their saliva. Saliva helps neutralize acids in the mouth and wash away food particles. If you have less saliva, or if it's less effective at neutralizing acids, your teeth are more vulnerable to decay. How to Protect Your Smile During Pregnancy Fortunately, there are many things you can do to maintain good oral care and protect your teeth throughout your pregnancy. Pregnancy is a special time, and with a little extra attention to your oral hygiene, you can keep your smile healthy and bright throughout your journey. Good oral care is an important part of overall health, for both you and your developing baby.... Read more...
